Dear Parents,
On Monday evening, our Year 5 & 6 parents participated in a ZOOM meeting addressing the many aspects of social media. Lachlan Ellis, the Canberra Goulburn Child Protection Officer, hosted the session. Lachlan has a vast knowledge and experience in Social Media and its usage among school age children.
It was wonderful to have the parents who joined the ZOOM on Monday, however I think it is a great opportunity to remind all our parent community of the importance of how our children use digital devices.
The key points from Lachlan’s presentation were:
- Children and parents to follow the legal age recommendation of each App. Most social media Apps have a legal age of 13 years old, however it is wise to check each one individually.
- Never share passwords with friends or allow friends to add content to your social media sites.
- Always remember that all content added to social media can be kept forever and can resurface many years down the track. This includes Snapchat pictures that are not stored on devices but are stored on international servers.
- As parent’s it is vital that you are present in your child’s device and social media usage. Studies show that earning trust and journeying with your child is far more effective then banning and blocking. It is about the education that parents can give to their children on the correct usage of the device. If a child trusts their parents they are more likely to report problems that occur when using digital apps and devices.
Lachlan has also provided guidelines to help parents understand the issues of children using digital devices. These are available in the links below.
Please remember the school is always here to support you and your children with the use of devices.
Regards
Phil Nielsen

Planning is underway for St Mary’s Intensive Swimming Program. All students are encouraged to participate in this program. Swimming is very much a part of the Australian lifestyle and a high level of swimming ability and knowledge and skill in water safety is not only highly desirable but could be life saving.
The program will run over five days, from Monday 30 November to Friday 4 December. The program will meet the needs of the K – 6 PDHPE Syllabus and is under the control of L&R Group from the Holland Park Swim Centre and their qualified instructors. Class teachers will attend to supervise. The primary aim is to develop each child’s swimming ability. The program will offer the following skill levels:
WATER LEARNER | Water Learner encourages children to become independent in the water. We introduce the fundamentals of water safety and continue to develop water confidence. The core focus is to get the child to stay afloat and start achieving short distances of propulsion. |
WATER BASIC | This level introduces swimming skills. At this level, children will learn kicking, breathing, streamline, body position and arm rotation, the core swimming skills needed to ensure your child has the correct techniques for their on-going development. |
WATER SKILLS | Children are now displaying correct freestyle techniques. We start to advance the distances of swimming to 15 metres. Backstroke is also introduced along with more advanced skills and drills to refine the child’s stroke and to continue water confidence. |
SQUAD |
Squad training has various levels. Re-enforcing the core swimming skills over a longer distances of 25m. The 50m squads focuses on fine tuning all four strokes along with further development of dives, introduction of turns, starts and finishes. There is also a concentration on developing fitness and fun in all squads. |
The students will be placed in groups depending on their level of ability as advised by parents, and in consultation with Angus. Students will be assessed on the first day to make sure they are in the correct group.
Students not attending the program will be supervised at school and set appropriate literacy learning activities.
We have received a fantastic grant from the Bland Shire Council which will be used to pay for half of the intensive swimming program.
Parents are asked to pay $35 per child plus pool entry of $12.50 if you do not have a pool season pass.
