- Sacrament of First Eucharist - Year 3/4
Dear Parents and Carers,
I would like to offer everyone a warm welcome to term 4, which is historically a very busy term. While there will be some adjustments, most of the usual term 4 events will take place. Some events to look forward to are: school photos, Year 5/6 day excursion, 2022 kinder orientation, intensive swimming program, end of year performances & yearly awards ceremony, Year 6 graduation mass and graduation dinner. More information on these events will be communicated in the coming weeks.
I am excited to inform you that we have a new student starting at St Mary’s today. Olivia Hoye has joined us from Kalgoorlie, Western Australia and she is in Year 1 Joy. We offer Olivia and her family a warm welcome to our school.
Our Year 3/4 students have been preparing for the Sacrament of First Communion and on Sunday they began the formal process by attending the Commitment Mass. On Tuesday they will continue their preparation with a retreat day and they will engage with symbols, meanings and experiences of the Eucharist with Fr Dom, Mrs Daniher, Mrs Nielsen and Mrs Harland. This Sunday 17 October the children will complete the initiation process where they will receive the Sacrament of First Communion.
The school is still operating under level 3 COVID-19 restrictions and I will relay any changes that are announced as soon as I am able.
Thank you for your continued support of our school.
God bless,
Phil Nielsen
St Mary's prays for the following children who will receive the Sacrament of the First Eucharist on Sunday the 17th of October:
Ashton Barber, Abbie Blampied, Amelia-Rose Blampied, Charlotte Carne, Zahli Cattle, Maci Coburn, Hunter Connellan, Evie Cuthbertson, Max Cuthbertson, Edith Dean, James Dean, Alan McCoullough, Hannah McDonell, Chloe Morton, Caitlin Parker, Larna Pilon, Alexander Ridley, Nate Sams, Leo Stephens, Marlee Wendt.
Lord Jesus,
Bless the children who are receiving the Sacrament of First Eucharist.
May this be an initial step into a life-long love of the Eucharist.
Give them a hunger for this sacred food so that they turn to you for comfort, guidance and wisdom as they grow into full discipleship.
Thank you for their innocence and goodness.
May their hands extended to receive your Body and Blood, inspire all of us to cherish this sacred sacrament.
Amen.

St Mary's would like to thank Bernardi's for their generous donation of hand sanitizer. It will be very useful.

Student Pickup and Drop Off on Church Street
During October, St Mary’s will be participating in Socktober, an Australian Catholic Missions initiative to raise funds for global poverty. This year’s effort will be directed to children in Thailand.
In Week 3 of Term 4, students will be learning about the life experiences of children in Thailand and making their own sock puppets.
Our school fundraising goal has been set at $200. This equates to roughly $2 donation per St Mary’s student. The following link will send you to our SMWMS fundraising page to donate. Your child’s name can be attached to the donation or you can choose to remain anonymous.

School Intensive Swimming Program
Planning is underway for St Mary’s Intensive Swimming Program. All students are encouraged to participate in this program. Swimming is very much a part of the Australian lifestyle and a high level of swimming ability and knowledge and skill in water safety is not only highly desirable but could be life saving.
The program will run over five days, from Thursday the 18th of November to Wednesday the 24th of November. The program will meet the needs of the K – 6 PDHPE Syllabus and is under the control of L&R Group from the Holland Park Swim Centre and their qualified instructors. Class teachers will attend to supervise. The primary aim is to develop each child’s swimming ability. The program will offer the following skill levels:
WATER LEARNER | Water Learner encourages children to become independent in the water. We introduce the fundamentals of water safety and continue to develop water confidence. The core focus is to get the child to stay afloat and start achieving short distances of propulsion. |
WATER BASIC | This level introduces swimming skills. At this level, children will learn kicking, breathing, streamline, body position and arm rotation, the core swimming skills needed to ensure your child has the correct techniques for their on-going development. |
WATER SKILLS | Children are now displaying correct freestyle techniques. We start to advance the distances of swimming to 15 metres. Backstroke is also introduced along with more advanced skills and drills to refine the child’s stroke and to continue water confidence. |
SQUAD |
Squad training has various levels. Re-enforcing the core swimming skills over a longer distances of 25m. The 50m squads focuses on fine tuning all four strokes along with further development of dives, introduction of turns, starts and finishes. There is also a concentration on developing fitness and fun in all squads. |
The students will be placed in groups depending on their level of ability as advised by parents, and in consultation with Angus. Students will be assessed on the first day to make sure they are in the correct group.
Students not attending the program will be supervised at school and set appropriate literacy learning activities.
Once costs have been finalised an electronic form to pay for the lessons and to advise swimming level will be sent to parents.
