Dear Parents and Carers,
I am delighted to inform you that the school had a tremendously successful Registration and School Improvement process last week. The panel were very impressed with our documentation and found the school to be compliant in all categories. St Mary’s also received some preliminary feedback and we were over whelmed with the many recommendations that were given. The panel were particularly impressed with how welcoming our students and staff were and applauded our ‘St Mary’s Shout Outs’, one panel member declaring that she would take the concept back to her school if she was to be a principal again. A more detailed report for the community will be provided in the coming weeks and I am excited to share this when it comes.
I would like to thank our entire school community for coming together for the process last week. I would particularly like to thank Sarah Curry who coordinated the work that was done out the front of the school. Thank you to all the parents that gave up their valuable time to help with the clearing and planting that took place.
The process for Semester 1 School Reports has begun and in 2022 St Mary’s is trialling a change from traditional times when the reports and interviews take place. This semester the reports will be made available on Friday 1 July in the Compass app. This is the last day of Term 2 and parent/teacher interviews will take place Week 2, Term 3. We are hoping that the change allows more teaching and learning time for the concepts that are covered in the semester. Further communication and booking procedures will occur week 1 next term.
God Bless,
Phil Nielsen
Sincere condolences to the Patton family on the loss of John Patton. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. God Bless.
St Mary's sends love and support to the Pace family, Joe and boys Joshua, Brad and Tim, on the loss of Sue last week. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
The Feast of the Holy Trinity
Jesus’ instruction that the disciples go out to all the nations and baptise them ‘in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’ is an instruction that is still being carried on today.
Those precise words are used by the priest at every baptism.
They are also the words used in the sign of the cross – whether that is a personal, private blessing of oneself or a blessing of a group as in the introductory and dismissal rites as part of a Eucharistic celebration.
When we make the sign of the cross we use the words of Jesus.
We are excited to welcome parents and carers back into our school and class masses.

School Satisfaction Survey 2022
PARENT SURVEY
During this week, closing Friday the 10th of June, we are inviting students (Year 4-6), teachers and parents to provide feedback on their experience of our school using an online survey. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process.
We would like to invite you as parents/carers to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at St Mary’s War Memorial School.
The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You are able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device by using the URL below:
STUDENT SURVEY
During the next two weeks, students in years 4, 5 and 6 will be given the opportunity and time to participate in this survey during regular school hours.
Students’ names cannot be linked to their responses which allows it to be completely anonymous. Results will show all student scores combined together – it is not possible to single out individual students in the results.
The survey takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. The survey measures include such topics as emotional and social well-being, physical health, and behaviours and attitudes linked to student success. The survey also allows students to give their thoughts and feedback in open-ended question responses.
Participation in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish to.
If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please contact the office.
If you would like more information, please contact Mr Nielsen.
Reporting - Semester 1 2022
Our teaching team has begun the process of creating each child’s Semester 1 2022 report.
In Semester 1:
For Kindergarten students:
- Achievement in each subject will be reported using a four-point scale (Well Above Expectations, Above Expectations, Meeting Expectations and Working Towards Expectations).
For Year 1 to Year 6 students:
- Academic grades for each subject using a five-point scale from A-E will be reported using the NSW Common Grade Scale.
For all students:
- Strand Achievement will be reported in English, Mathematics, Human Society and its Environment, PDHPE and Creative Arts using a five-point scale (Excellent, High, Sound, Basic, Elementary).
- Engagement with Learning statements, which are taken directly from the Australian Curriculum, will provide specific information about your child’s Critical and Creative Thinking, and Personal and Social Responsibility, using a three-point scale (Needs Improvement, Developing, Consistently).
- One general comment will be used in the Semester 1 Reports.
Dialogue is an important feature of reporting. The Semester Report in this format encourages parent engagement and conversation about student learning. We want the report to be the entry point for parent-teacher interviews where we can engage in genuine conversation about your child’s strengths, challenges, effort and areas for growth.
You are encouraged to book a parent-teacher interview in Week 2, Term 3 and the booking link will be sent out via email in Week 1.
A reminder that winter uniforms and ties need to be worn from Wednesday the 1st of June.
Students also need to move from shorts/skorts to long pants or tartan skirts and tights.
Ties and skirts are available from the school office for the price of $16 and $40.
Hats are now worn all year round.
Please ensure all items are marked with students names.
Scholastic Book Fundraiser for Lismore Floods
Simply order a book for the fundraiser as part of your Scholastic Book Club order and let your class teacher or the office know which book/s is for donation. When the orders arrive we will compile the donations and organise shipping to Lismore to restore books in their school libraries.
Your child's name will be recorded on a donation sticker on the inside book cover.
Purchasing books via Scholastic as part of this fundraiser also generates points that will be used by the class teachers to buy class books.
Your support is appreciated.
