Dear Parents and Carers
This week, we welcomed back our students to the school grounds and classrooms for normal face-to-face teaching and learning. It was great seeing all of our students walk onto school grounds. It was obvious by the smiles on their faces that they had missed the social interaction available by attending school. Their teachers were as equally excited to have them all back. Some classes have moved into new learning environments and they are adjusting very well. Most of our school community have viewed our ‘Happy’ video which was posted on our school Facebook page but is also attached to this newsletter. It was a wonderful celebration of the joy we are all feeling to be back at school.
It is a credit to you all for the way in which your children have conducted themselves over the Remote Learning period and to then return to school with positive attitudes ready for business as usual. We appreciated your support and partnership during this short term change in education.
As the whole school is back now we will continue to implement good hygiene practices and we ask that parents adhere to the social distancing restrictions placed on schools. These are reiterated further in our newsletter. Parents can come to the lawn area near the school office to drop off and pick up their child/ren. The classrooms will not be open in the mornings. Students leave their bags outside and move to the play area. We appreciate your observance of these restrictions which benefit the health and safety of our school community.
All students will need to wear their full school winter uniform (including ties) starting Monday 1st June next week. We have published the winter uniform requirements further on in this newsletter. Our school uniform is reflective of the pride we take in our school .Please note hats are to be worn all year around and we have noticed quite a few students have come to school without their hats. Our school policy is’ No hat no play’.
St Mary’s has been provided with additional funding from the Catholic Education Office in 2020 due to the ongoing effects of the drought. This funding is to support families experiencing the effects of the drought in our school community. We have provided a $317.60 fee remission to all families effective immediately for Term 2 fees. Statements have been posted this week which reflect this generous reduction. No child should be denied an education in a Catholic school due to financial reasons. Please contact Mr Nielsen if you wish to discuss this matter further.
Finally, on Tuesday we observed National Sorry Day. This day marks Australians all coming together and sharing the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities. We are so fortunate to have Uncle Bernie as a special member of our school community and he surprised the children with an online visit to our morning assembly this week. He was very emotional when talking to our students about our indigenous brothers and sisters who were taken from their families and placed in institutions or other homes. We were moved by his heartfelt tribute and appreciated him speaking to us all.

This week we celebrated the Feast of Mary, Our Lady Help of Christians. The Feast Day to Mary Help of Christians has been celebrated in Australia since 1844. Catholic Australia remained faithfull to Mary and was the first nation to choose her under the title Help of Christians, as principal Patroness. Australia became the first country to have a mother cathedral under the same title. We say this prayer to Mary so that she will guide us on this special day.
Almighty God, deepen in our hearts
our love of Mary Help of Christians.
Through her prayers and under her protection,
may the light of Christ shine over our land.
May Australia be granted harmony, justice and peace.
Grant wisdom to our leaders and integrity to our citizens.
Bless especially the men and women
of the Australian Defence Force and their families.
We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Mrs Emma McRae our counsellor will still be visiting our school next week on Wednesday the 3rd of June.
Emma will be holding her counselling sessions face to face again while maintaining the appropriate social distancing protocols.

GIRLS WINTER SKIRT
We are now able to take winter skirt orders.
The skirts will cost $40 each or if you would like a side pocket with a zip, to hold money or tissues, the skirt will cost $50.
You will need to take two measurements:
* a waist measurement
* the length from the waist to the knee.
Please then phone, or email using this link, your order to St Mary's School office leaving your name, your child's name, the measurements, if you would a zip pocket and how many skirts you would like to order.
We will let you know when the skirt is ready for pickup. We would prefer a cash payment for the skirt and this can be sent to the office.

Winter uniform, including ties, should be worn from next Monday 1st June. Ties are available from the school office at a cost of $16.
Our school uniform is always to be worn with pride. It is our brand and reflects the quality of our school.
Parents are asked to consider the following:
- Scarves and beanies are only to be worn when a student is dressed in full winter uniform and not to be worn inside. The items need to be navy blue.
- Tights worn with skorts are not a part of the summer or winter uniform.
- The lightweight jackets do not replace the fleece jumper. They can be worn in addition to the jumper when playing outside.
- Jumpers must be in good condition and replaced if the zipper is broken.
- The top button on shirts needs to be done up when a tie is worn. The buttonhole may need to be enlarged or a larger size shirt may be required.
- Singlets and T-Shirts worn under shirts need to be tucked in or at a length where they are not visible below the shirt hem.
- Shoes should be polished regularly.
- Ripped and very well worn and faded pants, shirts and hats needs to be replaced.
- Socks should be navy for girls and grey for boys.
- Canberra Goulburn representative jumpers are not school uniform and therefore should not to be worn at school.
Thank you for your efforts in keeping our students looking neat and tidy.
Fee statements for Term 2 have been posted.
A drought subsidy of $317.60 per family has been applied to your fees. For those who pay fees per term, could you please check your statement and alter your payment accordingly.
Those who have set up their own BPAY or direct debit payments are asked to also check their statement and alter or suspend your payments as required. Payment plans through the school's Catholic Development Fund can be altered here at the office. You will be contacted if we think you need to change your payment amount.
The school has the ability to provide school fee support for families in genuine need, and the CEO are offering fee relief for COVID-19 income loss. Confidential information is available at the school office.
School fee payment records are strictly confidential and access is restricted to office staff and the school principal. Please contact Mr Nielsen if you wish to discuss this matter or any other issue.
Just a reminder on the drop off and pickup procedures while our building works are in progress and COVID-19 restrictions are still in place.
Walkers
- Students walking to the southern end of town can leave the school from the Church Street entry (netball court) or the England Street bus stop area.
- Please note that students walking home are not permitted to walk through the Church carpark lane. Students may only enter the church carpark with their parents.
Parent Pickup and Drop Off
- At present due to social distancing restrictions placed on schools, classrooms are not open for children to enter in the morning. Please say goodbye to your children on the grass area near the new school office, children can then drop their bag outside their classroom. This will also apply each afternoon.
- Please do not drop off or pick your children at the front door of the school or at the school bus stop during the morning or afternoon bus times. It is very dangerous to stop in the path of the buses or cross in front of the school buses.
- Please do not drop your children using the lane near the cricket oval. This oval is being used exclusively by our builders and is out of bounds to cars and pedestrians.
- Please do not drive along the church lane in the middle of the school even if the gates are open, under no circumstances should parents drive down this lane as a short cut.
There is parking in the church carpark and on Church Street for dropping off children.
P & F Meeting
We are hoping to hold our P & F Meeting next Tuesday the 2nd of June at 7.30pm.
At this time the meeting will be held via a video conference. If you would like to attend this meeting please contact the P & F via their Facebook page and an invite to attend will be sent to you.
All parents and carers are welcome to attend.
Although students have returned to school, the canteen will not be operating until further notice. We wish to ensure our volunteers feel safe in the school environment, and hope it won't be too long before we can offer your child some treats and hot food.
